Maine DOE’s Dube to receive national award

A national organization is recognizing Nancy Dube, the Maine Department of Education’s school nurse consultant, for her contributions to school nursing and school health programs.

The National Association of State School Nurse Consultants will present Dube with the Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award during the association’s national conference in Washington, D.C., from June 26 to July 3.

The Maine Association of School Nurses nominated Dube for the recognition, and supplied recommendation letters from the Maine Department of Education, Maine School Management Association, former Maine Center for Disease Control director Dr. Dora Anne Mills and others.

“The inspiring letters so clearly reflected Nancy’s character and skills, and the valuable broad-based relationships that she has established as Maine’s school nurse consultant to support the safe practice of school nurses and to promote quality health care for school age children in Maine,” Brenda White, the Maine Association of School Nurses president, wrote in an email.

As school nursing becomes more specialized and health issues of students become more complex, it is increasingly crucial that school nurses have state-level school nursing leadership. This will ensure appropriate and timely information on changes in nurse practice and on medical, legal, and legislative issues being available to school nurses. Besides monitoring, informing, and consulting in these areas, a nurse at the state level can influence policy development by participating in state-level multidisciplinary partnerships.

State School Nurse Consultants can assist school nurses to advance their practice in the seven roles of school nursing. These roles are:

  • Providing direct health care to students and staff
  • Providing leadership for the provision of health services
  • Providing screening and referral for health conditions
  • Promoting a healthy school environment
  • Promoting health
  • Serving in a leadership role for health policies and programs
  • Serving as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
